High School & Beyond

Homeschooling through the teenage/high school years offers several different challenges. You may need to meet specific requirements and you may find that you are teaching subjects with which you are not familiar. In addition, many parents don’t begin homeschooling until their child reaches high school age. To help navigate this sometimes new territory, we’ve put together helpful resources to help both parent and student successfully homeschool during the high school years.

The Bookroom
The Bookroom is for homeschooling families using "living books" and other educational materials designed to delight the interested learner. Members vary in educational style, including classical educators, unschoolers, and Charlotte Mason teachers as well as members who borrow from a variety of educational philosophies.
Can You Homeschool and Only Child?
When most people think of homeschooling, they automatically think of a large family. A family with at least five or six kids and a mom in a denim jumpsuit that has everything organized like a well oiled machine. While that stereotype still exists in some families, homeschoolers come in all shapes and sizes including a large number of families who now homeschool an only child.
NCAA Guidelines for Home School Students
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary organization through which the nation's colleges and universities govern their athletics programs. If you want to play NCAA sports at a Division I or II school, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you were home schooled for any part of high school. If you are planning to attend a Division III school, you do not need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Bob Jones University Testing and Evaluation Services
Offers the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), the Stanford Achievement Test, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT). There are some specific guidelines for administering these tests, including requirements in some cases for a bachelor's degree, teacher certification, and/or special training in test administration. Also offered are test support products designed to help your child achieve higher test scores.

How to Plan High School Core Courses in Your Homeschool

Planning for those all-important core courses is very doable and actually doesn't require too much effort. By following the general sequence for most subjects, you will be able to effectively and successfully plan for your child's high school years. These core courses include: math, science, history/social studies, English, and a foreign language.
